Book Description
The idea for this book came when we realized how helpful the hands-on theory application approach we developed when teaching Visual Basic and Database Analysis and Design was to our students. In this method, theory is introduced within the context of its application and is then relearned through hands on application building whereby students end each class with after building at least one new application that demonstrates the material. The method is very much based on Dr. Gefen's industry experience. This is how Dr. Gefen used to train new programmers in his team. The book itself is based on a series of highly successful courses taught by the authors using this approach at the undergraduate and graduate level at Drexel University. An advantage of this method is that students are not overloaded with man" language and syntax details before they begin applying the concepts. Rather, students learn to apply these concepts as they are taught. This makes learning much easier y letting the students ground the theoretical concepts in an actual application and so getting a good feel for it. VB.NET is a unique and powerful language that is based on the .NET framework. It combines a fully object oriented language with a powerful graphical user interface. Teaching such a language requires detailed attention to both theory and hands-on practice because of the complexity of the theory, especially since students often learn VB.NET as their first programming language. This textbook was written with the recognition that special attention must be given to presenting the material in such a way that while being comprehensive in covering the theory part of the language and the extensive .NET architecture it is based upon, the presentation should still present the material in a manageable easy to understand manner. Combining these needs, this book presents the successful hands-on theory application method combined with extensive review labs. These labs guide the student in a detailed manner in building an application that demonstrates the main topics discussed in that chapter. This method teaches the extensive VB.NET theory within the context of hands-on application building so that the student clearly understands the context to tie theory into. We wrote the book based on our experience that theory alone is hard to learn and that hands-on practice alone does not provide a sufficiently deep understanding of how to implement the language. Integrating these two perspectives enable the students see the big picture, the theory, at a high level, while still firmly rooted with their feet on the ground, applying this theory in code. The book, although being an advanced VB.NET book, starts with a detailed review of the basics. We have discovered that students in advanced courses often require a review of the material they have learned earlier on in their academic endeavor. The comprehensive summary provides a necessary resource for an advanced course by summarizing and extending previously acquired knowledge. At the same time, this summary is also written in such a way that, beyond being a review, the book can serve as the first textbook in a series of VB.NET courses. The book then delves into more advanced topics, including file and directory management, access methods, graphics, and multi-threading, before dealing with the core material of ADO and ASP.

From the Back Cover

Visual Basic .NET, the successor to Visual Basic 6, is a powerful, fully object-oriented programming tool that allows you to create rich desktop applications for Windows and Web applications. Gefen and Govindarajulu's Advanced Visual Basic® .NET presents complex topics in Visual Basic .NET in an accessible manner that is easy to understand. Begin with a comprehensive review of VB .NET fundamentals before delving into ADO .NET, ASP .NET, and other advanced topics of VB .NET programming.

Following the proven teaching approach of including both conceptual and practical materials in every lecture, each chapter in this book features two sections: a theoretical section and a hands-on review lab section. The theory sections focus on the syntactical and structural elements of VB .NET, while the lab sections focus on guided application building to reinforce student learning. The topics covered in this book include:

All the lab examples are included with the student CD to facilitate student learning.
