Storm Clouds over Party Shoes: Etiquette Problems for the Ill-Bred Woman

Sometimes a book can change your life, and for Sheila Norgate that moment came with an unlikely little tome called It's More Fun When You Know the Rules: Etiquette Problems for Girls. Published in 1935, the book emphasized important goals for women, such as keeping quiet, pleasing a man, and knowing when not to wear a hat. Although she'd explored other artistic options before coming upon this flea-market find, Norgate soon found her calling with collage, pasting the book's words next to images culled from magazine ads of the same period. Her work expanded to include advice appropriated from women's magazines of the pre- and post-war eras, some as late as 1965. The result is a success on many levels. On the surface, it can be taken as a glance back at social expectation for women. Many will find themselves amused and a bit horrified at such tidbits as, "A man fears a sharp-tongued woman. She ought to fear herself," and "Keep your hips folded down and under you, like a puppy with its tail between its legs." Probing deeper, Norgate's work shows that the lack of gender equality may have been more blatant then, but the ramifications of silencing women are still being felt today. On a purely artistic level, her artwork is balanced and engaging. Norgate should be congratulated for packing so much dynamite into her book, and letting the reader strike the match.
