About the Author
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Spotlights shine on Louisa Arnold in her lifelong passion for writing humorous poetry. As a child, she mischievously wrote romantic delivery instructions to the milkman...in verse! During her school years, when given an essay assignment, she invariably wrote in rhyme rather than prose. Having graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts at Carnegie Hall in New York City, Ms. Arnold traveled with USO Camp Shows performing her original comedy monologues and musicals. She also acted in the stage production of “Auntie Mame” starring Giselle McKenzie, and then landed a leading role in a Hollywood movie. Once, as a contestant, Louisa baffled the panel of the TV show “what’s My Line?” She remains active in local community theatre. Louisa grew up with the stigma of being a “really fat kid.” After whipping her weight problem, fitness became a very important part of her life and she maintains a dress size 4 rather than her former size 20. Health oriented, Louisa developed and introduced the unique figure control method called “Bottoms Up” which is now taught at internationally known health spas. In earlier years, Louisa entered the Mrs. America Contest, winning the title of “Mrs. Whittier.” An entrepreneur, she was the first west coast microwave oven specialist and salesperson to rent booth space at home shows, selling product right off the floor. Following a divorce and aware of the stresses in people’s lives, Louisa creatively coordinated and successfully directed another first for those years. It was a school for singles, designed to help people reach out to others, thereby enriching their own lives. In 1974, Louisa married the inventor of the outdoor gas barbecue and became Mrs. Philip E. Arnold. As the story goes, at a friend’s barbecue party, in return for a five gallon tank of propane gas traded to the host, Phil got Louisa! Then, being retired, the happy bride tried her hand at tennis. She insists she was a real “klutz!” But after four years of dedicated daily practice, Louisa won her first tennis tournament. But good fortune wasn’t always on her side. A near-death surfing accident in Mazatlan, Mexico in 1980 left Louisa with a broken neck, spinal cord injuries and paralyzed arms and hands. Bedridden, she defied all medical predictions and began the long, painful process of recovery. Despite this crippling experience, Louisa was determined to play competitive tennis again. She remains forever convinced that Phil’s support and encouragement is responsible for her successful recovery, return to the court and 39 more tennis tournament trophies! Originally from Westchester County, New York, Louisa has lived most of her life in California.
