Book Description
Only Entertainment is a classic collection of essays on entertainment and the pleasures of popular culture. Richard Dyer argues that any analysis of entertainment begins with recognizing that entertainment is part of a "common sense" which is always historically and culturally constructed. Dyer examines this social construction of entertainment without rejecting aesthetic or ideological criticism, and his subjects range from The Sound of Music to action cinema, classical ballet to disco, star pin-ups to pornography. The second edition features a new introduction placing the essays in the context of cultural debates.
