About the Author
Gerald E. Whittenburg, PhD, CPA, EA, is a Professor in the School of Accountancy at San Diego State University. A graduate of the University of Houston, Dr. Whittenburg's teaching and research interests include individual and corporate taxation, pension plans, and tax research methodology.
Dr. Whittenburg is an author of Federal Tax Research and Income Tax Fundamentals. In addition, he has published articles in such journals as the Advances in Taxation, Practical Tax Strategies, Taxes-the Tax Magazines, Journal of Taxation of Investments, Journal of Taxation of Employee Benefits, Journal of Taxation of Financial Institutions, Valuation Strategies, Journal of Small Business Strategy, Tax Adviser, and Journal of Accounting Education. Professor Whittenburg's professional designations include Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Enrolled Agent (EA). He has received numerous teaching awards, including the Trustee's Outstanding Faculty Award for the entire California State University System. Recently, Dr. Whittenburg spent a sabbatical at the University of Adelaide in Australia. In his picture, he is shown with "Pumpkin" the koala. Martha Altus-Buller is a CPA with her own tax practice in San Diego, California. She attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon for two years, holds a BA in Mathematics from the University of California at San Diego and a MS in Accounting from San Diego State University. She won a Sells award for scoring among the top exams the country on the May 1983 CPA exam. Her practical experience includes work as a tax manager for Arthur Young, now Ernst & Young, one of the (then) Big 8 accounting firms, and more than two decades of full time practice in tax accounting.
